それまでジェイ・ディーと名乗っていた彼が初めてJ・ディラ名義で発表した初のソロ・アルバムにしてヒップホップ史に残る金字塔『Welcome 2 Detroit』は、後にピート・ロックやジャジー・ジェフらが後に続き2000年代のヒップホップの一つの方向性を決定づけた『Beat Generation』シリーズの第一弾として2001年2月26日にBBEからリリース。この記念すべきアルバムがリリースされた月であり、彼の生まれた月でもあり、そして亡くなった月でもあるという2月に、20周年を記念して『Welcome 2 Detroit』が7インチ12枚組というボックス・セットで蘇る ! 
 
バスタ・ライムスが名付けたというJ・ディラ名義でリリースされた本作、彼の出身地デトロイトをリプリゼントすべくゲスト・ラッパー陣は全て地元のアーティストで固めており、フランクンダンクからエルジー、ファット・キャットが参加し、J・ディラがデトロイトで聴いて育ったクラフトワーク、アフリカン、ジャズ・ファンク／ボサノヴァ、そしてもちろんブーム・バップに至るあらゆる音楽をディラ流に仕上げたクラシックがズラリ… ! 全てデジタル・リマスタリングを施し、さらにこのアルバムのセッション中にJ・ディラのプライベート・テープに残された未発表音源やアウト・テイクを追加収録、そして日本が誇るキング・オブ・ディギン、Muroによる「Think Twice」のリミックス、クラシック「Rico Suave Bossa Nova」のアジムスによるカヴァーなどを収めた全46曲の脅威のヴォリュームで送るボックスセット ! アンプ・フィドラーやマ・デュークスなど参加アーティストのインタビューなどを収録したブックレット (英語) も付属。
