Abstract
Rural areas play an invaluable role in the economic and social development of the Republic of
Paraguay. Itapua, one of the most productive departments in the country, for its rainfed agriculture
is highly dependent on rainfall. The frequency and intensity of extreme water events present an
increasing worldwide trend. For this reason, we studied the variability of the average daily
intensity of annual precipitation (IMDA) at different time scales, in Captain Meza. Annual rainfall
data and number of days per year with precipitation, corresponding to the 1976-2017 series, of
the meteorological station Captain Meza were used. The daily mean intensity of annual
precipitation (IMDP) is calculated following the methodology developed by Bongianino et al.
(2018). Positive extreme events of IMDP were considered at values above the 95th percentile and
negative values below the 5th percentile. For the time scale of the 21st and 11th years, a decrease
in the intensity of precipitation was observed from the middle of the from the eighties to the
present. At the beginning of the series, positive precipitation intensities with positive extreme
events prevailed. From 1989 to 2006, negative precipitation intensities prevailed with a single
extreme negative event. Finally, from 2007 to date, positive and negative deviations were
observed without extreme events. Based on the results, it is concluded that there is no upward or
downward trend in the IMDA of rainfall.
