Abstract

This article examines the causes of student dropout in the Bachelor of Music program at a higher education institution in Paraguay. Dropout is understood as a multifactorial phenomenon that affects both students' academic development and the effectiveness of institutional policies. The study aimed to analyze the factors influencing students’ decisions to abandon their studies, focusing on three key dimensions: personal, economic, and institutional. A qualitative phenomenological approach was adopted, based on semi-structured interviews conducted with a purposive sample of ten former students. Thematic coding was used to identify common patterns and contrasting experiences. The findings reveal that working while studying, curricular rigidity, lack of institutional support, and economic hardship are critical contributors to dropout. Cross-cutting factors such as emotional exhaustion, dissatisfaction with academic training, and disconnection from the professional field were also identified. The conclusions highlight the need for targeted retention policies for arts programs that take into account the intensity of their demands, the diversity of student trajectories, and the improvement of institutional conditions. Recommendations include revising curricula, strengthening student support systems, and increasing access to financial and material resources.
