Abstract

The Bubonic Plague is caused by the bacteria Yersinia petis that is spread by fleas with the help of the black rat – Rattus rattus and is a disease considered one of the oldest and most virulent recognized zoonoses. As for COVID-19, it is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus and is the most recent of all pandemics. Both historically distant events showed the survival of stigma in times of crisis. Stigma emerges in a variety of cultures and its consequences are markedly harmful. The difference in estimated risk and related response is linked to stigma. This review seeks to highlight the similarities between these two pandemics and analyze the consequences of attributing the origin and/or presence of a disease to a specific place in a stage of health crisis by telling their stories. The initial keyword search resulted in 650,613 articles. After applying the filters corresponding to the inclusion criteria, there were 50 basic articles and 31 cited articles. As a reflection, the authors urge the scientific community to avoid using geographic locations to name a disease due to its immediate consequences for the affected population.
