EVALUATION OF TWO ROTATIONAL GRAZING STRATEGIES ON FORAGE PARAMETERS AND WEIGHT GAIN OF CATTLE IN THE YHÚ DISTRICT

Abstract

The present study analyzes the impact of two rotational grazing strategies on forage and productive indicators in cattle, within a context where livestock production constitutes an economic, social, and environmental pillar for Paraguay, generating employment, national wealth, and export competitiveness. The research arises from the need to optimize the utilization of forage resources, given that pasture represents the most economical and accessible feed source, and to promote sustainable livestock systems aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 2 and 12). Therefore, the objective was to evaluate the effect of two rotational grazing strategies on forage availability, forage disappearance rate, and average daily gain of cattle. The study was conducted from November 2024 to February 2025 in the community of Yukyry (Yhú district), over an area of 100 ha sown with Brachiaria brizantha var. MG4, divided into 100 subplots of 1 ha each. A completely randomized design was applied with two treatments: T1 high stocking rate and very short grazing period (400 head ha, rotation every 12 h) and T2 moderate stocking rate and short grazing period (200 head ha, rotation every 24 h), over 90 days. The experimental population consisted of 600 crossbred cattle (average initial live weight 280 kg), from which a proportional stratified random sample of 150 animals (100 in T1 and 50 in T2) was selected for data collection. Forage availability was determined by direct measurement using quadrat sampling, and forage disappearance rate was calculated as the difference between final and initial availability. Live weight was recorded periodically using a digital scale to determine average daily gain. Statistical analysis was performed using Student s t test. The results showed no statistically significant differences between treatments for forage availability and disappearance rate. However, average daily gain was significantly higher in T2. It is concluded that grazing management strategies based on moderate and high stocking rates, when adjusting grazing period length, do not affect pasture demand; however, they directly influence cattle weight gain, favoring less intensive stocking rates.
